windshield regulator

Does anyone have a good method to make the windshield regulator slide a little easier. I installed mine last night, I thought I had gone through it and lubed it all nicely, but it still seems too hard to turn the knob. Now I know why every one I've seen has vise grip marks all over the shaft.That sliding mechanism seems suseptable to a hard action. Any words of wisdom?
