Don't forget the plastic sheet and duct tape, and the most important emergency tool of all, a radio with plenty of batteries so you can listen to Official Instructions from the official government men telling you where to go to assemble to be taken to the Official Shelters.
Some sort of FEMA/DHS bunch was handing out clever little "what to do in a disaster" kits a year or so ago and they included a cardboard "calculator" where you could turn the wheel to point to what kind of disaster you were personally experiencing, and then look through the window to read what you should do about it. In every case, the one thing that you absolutely must do is Listen To Your Radio For Official Instructions.
