I don't know about this 1" of pedal travel, it may be the real problem.
On the other hand, if you can't put it in gear, adjusting it for more free play
will only make it worse. You should take all free play out (as an experiment) and see
what happens. Then, if it works, give it a little play.
If the TOB is pressing on the fingers, the clutch should slip. That part is correct.
