Steve, it does,'t make any sense that it only steers one direction. Does the steering wheel spin both ways, but only engages in one, or can the wheel only be spun one direction?
If the steering box is one of those ball & screw kind, maybe one of the balls is missing. If it's a regular screw and pinion, then it's probably totaly worn out, but then it wouldn't turn at all. An unlikely thing, but if the control arm is so worn out that it only catches occasionally, then you've found the problem.
I'd put her up on jack stands, take off both front wheels, and go through the entire asssembly to see whats broken. That'd be the first step.
