Just to add my 2 cents worth, I prefer the frame lengthening option.
When you chop the bed at one end or the other, you loose the "balanced" look of the rear axle placement. Just look at some of the new crew cab mini pickups for an example. The Dodge Dakota has a pleasing look with the "balance" I'm speaking of but the others (Nissan & Ford Ranger) are examples of "out of balance" axle location. They have the wheel well cutting into the rear door and have a large amount of overhang at the rear.
My guess is that the manufacturers will lengthen their wheelbase in coming years to make their trucks look better but then again, I might be considered totally wrong by those who appreciate the shorter turning radius and look of these trucks. Like I said... Just my thoughts! Good Luck!
