I have a '67 318ci. Same thing happened with my 2bbl, one of those nasty stromberg units. I got a 4bbl intake off a 360 and bought a Carter AFB which is basicly the same as the Edelbrock. It had that stinky rich smell also, I adjusted the timing closer to TDC and it went away with no problems. I should have used the edelbrock intake though. There is a big diffrence there in fuel conumption and performance. I think that the pre-67 318 is the wideblock "semi-hemi" and is different although I am not sure how.
