I would use the original distributor with a ballast resistor on the hot lead to the coil, just like Dodge vehicles have used since they went to 12-volts. As far as I know, the coils have been pretty much 6-volt units with ballast resistors in line. The reason they did it this way is to bypass the ballast resistor during cranking, giving much hotter sparks for starting. Also, there are many old 12-volt generators available from the period when the factory went from 6-volts to 12-volts and when the factory went from generators to alternators. The voltage regulator will have to be changed to a 12-volt unit. Make sure that the polarity will be compatible for the positive ground. Good luck.
