Here are a few thoughts other than changing out your gears; installing an overdrive transmission or putting on taller tires.

Not necessarily in this or any order --------

Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Check spark plugs (are they clean and not eroded?)

Check that your engine thermostat has correct rating and is working properly.

Check Air filter (is it clean?) Install a K&N filter (higher flow throughput)

Check compression for each cylinder.

Do a vacuum check to make sure it is within specs.

Make sure timing is correct (use dynamic)

Make sure PCV is working and clean.

Make sure that idle air mixture is correct
ratio (should be 13-1). (You really need a probe to do this correctly.)

Make sure that the dashpot is installed and working properly.

Install higher output ignition (preferably an electonic pointless type)

Install platinum plugs.

Finally - use a light foot when accelerating and don't use the engine for braking (I'm still trying to learn how to do this - Old habits die hard)
