I have seen a 274ci desoto hemi transplanted into a '49 PW. It's a really clean swap, the only thing that looks a little off is the trans sticks up a little higher in the cab and the radiator is different. Heres the deal though, it dosent go any faster. Granted that you won't have to downshift as mutch when you hit a hill. The real benifit is with the addition of 4.89's or 4.10's. the motor itself looks like it belongs in there, it begs the question why it was'nt an option. I also wonder why chrysler stopped producing the smaller hemi's. I think that Dave Cirillo had a PW with a hemi in it. I have looked into this conversion myself and there are a couple of things to weigh out in your head. I like the Hemi because of it's nostalgic value and power (plus it's cool to say you have a hemi under the hood). I dont like the hemi because of the cost to rebuild it (probably $3000 in parts alone if you can find them)and lets face it, it's a gas guzzler. Maby a good alternative to this is the pre-67 318ci also known as the semi-hemi. I personally like the idea of a repower with a diesel for the Q (torque) and fuel consumption is less than that of a gasser also diesel is cheaper to buy at the truck stops than gasoline. Unfortunatly I will need to take out a home equity loan to afford the diesel I want. I have seen ads for running small hemi's recently for about $400. Just my take on it.
