Hi Bob!

There are basically two ways to time your engine:
1. By timing light, or
2. By octane.

I'll assume you have a vacum advanced distributor. When doing it by octane you may want to stay with a certain brand of gas. Go out on a country road. Adjust your timimg till you get a few pings and then pings quit when you floor your throttle around 20 miles and hour. You then are timed to the octane you will be using. All the other part replacement suggestions from the other guys you should do. An indication of a worn distributor is the engine cutting out at higher rpm (points float). Good Luck!
