missing under load canbe caused by a weak spark-full throttle lets in more
fuel mixture, which takes more energy to ionize.
other things:burned valve- check compression
fuel delivery- check pump, filters, cracked fuel lines, plugged jet
weak spark- condenser,wires,cracked cap

to static time an engine: theres a little pipe plug over the #6 cylinder. unscrew it, insert
a piece of wire- long enough not to drop it in. turn engine by hand til piston reaches top of
stroke, you are now at t.d.c. of either #1 or #6.make some marks on the front pulley and pointer at this time.
remove dist. cap, loosen distand rotate back and forth til sparks fly at points- you should hear a click.
this works on new engine assembliesand is the way VW books reccommend as s.o.p. at tuneup time.

good luck, have fun, learn a lot of the basics on one of the simpler vehicles on the road today (y2k compliant)!!!
