I emailed the FAQ section of the New York State DMV. I need to know if, in 1954,
vehicles used one plate (rear) or two (front & rear). There were certain years, after WW2, when steel was at a premium, and NY only issued one plate, and issued a small metal tag for the following year.

I have a 1954 Power Wagon, and wish to put a YOM (year of manufacture) plate
on it. I have one 1953 plate, in black/yellow, and a "54" metal corner tag
in yellow/black, that bolts on to make it a 1954.

So, the question was:

"In 1954, did vehicles use one plate, or two?"

Their answer (after a two-week wait):

"In 1954, vehicles registered in New York State used one set of plates."

ARRRRRRRRGH!
