BECAUSE.....we have a free interprise system where individuals are allowed to charge different prices to cover their overhead or increase their profit. It's up to an intelligent consumer to figure out the best price for them and shop there. My local 76 station is $2.63, the Mobil across the street is $3.05, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where to buy. Apparently too many people are still buying at the $2.95 station for them to worry about being overpriced. Another reason is that NY taxes per gallon are higher than the adjacent states, on the CA AZ border you can save 15 cents per gallon by driving out of CA and into AZ to fill-up because of the differences in tax structure. Also if you are near Paul, in the NY Artic climate zone, there is the snow plow and tire chains fee.....
