How do you fix the speedometer needle?

The gauges on my 47 WF-32 are in excellent condition. They look good and they all work. The odometer on the speedo is still turning the miles but the speedometer itself is missing its needle. How does one go about replacing this needle? I spoke with someone in Texas a few weeks ago and they said something about a nylon/plastic ring that goes bad and the needle falls off? Can some one fill me in on the details of what has happened and how to fix this?
