I think 30wt sticks around longer. I just use the dip stick as an oil applicator for wicks. Also wash the bottom part of the housing- you'll see how much crud the "stone age, everlasting filter" has picked up. Refill to "Oil Line" stamped in the side.

I guess you could disassemble the filter by drilling out spot welds, and using screws or pop rivets to replace them. And filling it back up with coarse steel wool or plasticized horse hair. Hmmm, Stainless Steel Wool would be hot...

Sometimes the steel wool is rusted away. More often, I think water sits in the pan, under the oil, and rusts holes out the bottom. The crud is pretty corrosive, and both water and crud sink through the oil. Probably a good idea to service the filter more often if driven in the rain? Even though the rain wash the dirt out of the air?
