I think "berate" is too strong a word. I like "advise" or even "admonish".
You say you are right at the maximum capacity.
The definition of overloaded is "right at maximum capacity."
I'm sure you've heard the expression "headroom"? It's an engineering concept that has served us well. A 7000# load should be on a 10,000# (rated) trailer.
Norm is not the only one of your friends here who is scared of maxed-out trailers.
