Drive shaft emergency brake question.

I was climbing under a c700 or some such Dodge truck . It has a drum with OD shoes on the drive shaft . Maybe 10 inches in diameter . Do these work ok or are they a pile of poop .
It looks like a natural for the carryall.

But what do I know ?
