First thing I do is pull the fill plug on the diff and feel the surface of the ring gear. it should be nice and smooth. if someone has ever run it dry of gear oil the ring gear teeth will have waves on the surface. If it seems good then jack up the back of the truck, make sure it is in 2 wheel drive then start it and put it in third or fourth gear and gently let clutch out then get underneath with a stethoscope or long screwdriver and listen to the diff and the Tcase to try and isolate the noise. you may have to pull out on the hand throttle to bring the rpms up. Use jack stands and block the front tires or put both ends of truck on jack stands, be careful!
