You are absolutely correct, it must have been this year when I wasn't there. You should NEVER winch without a towel, tarp, blanket, jacket, anything drapped over the cable. The small amount of weight will prevent the cable from whipping. It doesn't seem possible, but it works. Warn used to have a video on their web site showing the towel trick work.
