As someone else mentioned, I use a plastic outboard motor gas tank. No rust, easy to move between vehicles, it has a gauge, even a hump in the bottom to create a "reserve" function. Also, the rubber bulb pump in the line saves my batteries and starter motors. You can even get crazy and put in one of the fuel line quick-disconnects. Just don't put it in the engine compartment...
