That would by-pass the radiator, but not the thermostat. Maybe there is a marine thermo housing that would do it, they use lots of adapters to marinise auto blocks. Perhaps a spacer with a fitting in it could be made from an alumiminum block? Then put thermo on top? Aluminum works with lots of wood working tools- band saw, spade bit...
Or, just run the loop of heater hose, like originally proposed.
