First of all: NEVER use the word Conservationists when you mean environmentalist wacko.
Conservationists are Farmers, Ranchers, Outdoorsmen, Hunters, Fishermen, Campers etc. We respect the land and conserve and protect it with common sense and practical knowledge. Environmentalist are mainly city folk who look at pictures in books, think all deer are Bambi and have not a clue what it's like to live in the West on a daily basis. Their idea of preservation is to close everything to human activity.
Second: An area that is closed off in that manner, usually has a sign attached explaining that re-forestation is underway or some plant or animal is being protected. Other scenarios are, it's now private property, or the road is impassible further on. The point being that unless you know for sure, trying to move, destroy or go over a road closure just solidifies the bad reputation that off roaders have and lends credence to why the road was closed in the first place. The proper tact to take is to find out who owns the land, FS, BLM, etc. and TALK to the District Ranger in charge and get the story before taking irresponsible action. It may very well have been a private property owner who, like me, was tired of jerks running over his property, damaging fences, burning and shooting up outbuildings, etc.
There are many, many "inholders" that own private property inside of BLM and National Forest land.
