I had that exact setup on a powerwagon with no bed on, just the weight of the bare frame and all the rest made the tires just barely rub. My soultion was to machine a set of spacers out of 5/8" stock to fit between the wheels and really long studs. probably o.k. for crawling around a soft field, and throwing hay bales off the back. Theres too much chance for vibration to loosen things up. I thought about welding the plate to the face of the outer wheel, but decided against it.
The best dually set up I have found is the 20" GMC wheels with the PW lug pattern machined into them. But then theres a issue of the rolling diameter of the tire. Lots of people use them without any issues that I have heard of. I guess disc brakes and a v8 engine would solve those problems pretty easily.
