Don't be to hard on the son. He's no different than most teenagers growing up and has interest probably elsewhere. Forget Volo for this year, stop project work, and sit down with the son and ask if he is really interested in this project. If he isn't, get him involved in what he is interested in and resume your project alone, but also expect that at times he will probably lend a hand.
As for the nieghbor, you may want to start at Midnight, bangging more often with more force.
