The 340 is a great engine! However it's a great engine for a car since it was designed to run at a higher rpm. The engine was developed at the same time the AAR Cuda was being fine tuned for the Trans Am Racing Series. The engine developement criteria was primarily for a high reving, top end, fire breathing road racer. It puts out impressive numbers, but at a very high rpm, not useable low speed power that a Power Wagon needs. It is the same block as the 273-318-340-360 LA series.
For a truck motor you'd be better off with a 360, built for torque, or a 318A Poly.
Or yes...that A100 dragster!
It has the same stroke as the 318, a bigger bore than a 360. While on the surface that would seem like a good thing for a truck, the 340 has high-flow heads, big ports, a two-level intake manifold, and a six-barrel option (three two-barrel carbs). The motor is up to the task, at high rpms, the truck wouldn't be! (visualize rock crawling at 97 mph and you get my point).
