I was at Carlsbad Raceway the day "Bimbo" won the 500cc U.S.G.P. That was also the day that privateer Mike Bell landed himself a factory ride for his perfomance in the 250cc support class.

That race was televised on the Wide World of Sports. My family and I were positioned along the track at a place I believe they called the "Carlsbad Freeway". This was right after a hairpin turn at the top of the biggest hill, with a short straightaway where they could get up to about 3rd gear before sailing off of a giant downhill jump. We were all stuffed into a corner of the fence where it made a jog for the TV camera crew. I was leaning out over the fence the whole race in front of the cameras. I must have ruined most of their footage as I only got my arm shown on TV a couple of times. I was the kid wearing the Honda motocross jersey, Just like the ones that Jim Pomeroy and Brad Lackey were racing in that day. I think if I remember correctly Roger DeCoster was on the Honda team by then also. At one point in the race, it was Honda 1-2-3.

You could hardly hear the bikes or tha anouncer the crown was absolutly nuts cheering on the American riders.

Brings back a lot of memories.

Junior, AKA Clint "Trick" (as in my bike was tricked to the max) Dixon
