Tail light wire gauge?

I'm wiring my Carryall for more modern lights and have a question on what wire gauge to use. The WM300 wiring diagram in Joe's Glove Box shows 18 gauge for the tail and brake lights. 18 gauge seems a little small if you're ever going to hook up a trailer. Should I go down to 16 gauge or stick to the diagram?
