It's best to remove a distributor to work inside it. Just bump it around til the rotor points straight ahead and you won't have any problem getting it back in right. Need a liming light though, but you should have one anyhow , it needs timing whenever the points get fiddled with. And, points need to be replaced or adjuisted every 5-10,000 miles. Once the dist is where you can get a good look-see, (in a vise, or drop it into one of the post holes in the bed) make sure all the wires are on the right side of things. More often than bad insulators is a bad primary wire- the one from the points to the coil, either broken or bad insulation.

This reminds me, my dist has a bad insulator wear the screw comes through the side of the distributator. I'll need to fix that.

I'm not sure of the various models of dist, but you may need to replace the whole 'breaker plate' to fix broken insulation, if that is your problem.
