Brake Woes

I just got back from the local machine shop and they informed me that my brake drums were no good. One was.055 over and one .100, which means they were way overdue for replacement. Is replacement my only option? I've heard of shops that "build up" the brake surface then turn them down to the correct diameter. Is this feasable, safe or even legal? I was already bummed about the $40 turning fee. Now it looks like im in for some real money.
