I need a few shear pins for my Bush Hog rotary mower.
They need to be 7/16" diameter by 3" long bolts. I believe these are about a grade 2 in hardness/strength. A grade 2 bolt (that would work in place of a shear pin)in this size is not available except in large lots from places like Fastenal, MSC, etc.
I can buy shear pins at the tractor dealer 18 miles away. However, I wondered if I could take a grade 5 bolt, heat it red hot, and then let it cool slowly. Would that take it near grade 2, or is it a different metal also, not just stonger from heat treating?
