It is my limited understanding from my interest in toy trains, that the pot-metal deterioration problem is caused by the manufacturers' having used scrap metal in the mix, instead of virgin metal. This practice led to impurities being introduced into the pot.

Many toy trains from the 1910's, 20's and 30's had pot metal wheels and other parts that had crumbled by the 1950's.

The answer, by the way, to repairing these parts, at least on toy trains, is to infuse the parts with superglue, which seals the cracks, and slows the aging process.
