How are you able use the truck's original ammeter (which we must assume is capable of reading no more than 60 amps)?

The output of the ammeter into a dead battery would fry it, I would think. Did you run the #8 (#6?) wire from the alt to the ammeter, then back to the battery? That's not prudent, to have all that current running around between your legs.

Pray tell, how did you do it?
