Thanks Eric, for giving me the years that the v-8 starter had a remote soleniod. I purchased a rebuilt starter, an OCA, 5222.
The starter has the correct bendix (9 teeth)for the poly flywheel. I dont know if the 318LA takes the same flywheel or not. I put the starter into the bell housing but the holes would not line up. I then compared the starter nose with the original starter. The cut out for the bendix was different, by a good quarter of an inch on one side, see white line on the starter. By grinding this material away, the starter will rotate enough for the holes to align and presto, a starter which works and plays well with its neighbors!
