Thanks for the site. Yeah, those are the ones I was thinking of. They seem like an expensive compromise to me. Not a big enough footprint for soft snow, extra stress on the axles, and for the price of a set, you could buy a well-used but still servicable snow-cat.

On old guy I knew (just died, sadly) told me how he and his friends would make snow cats when he was young living in Montana somewhere. They'd find an old pickup with a trashed body but working drivetrain, and get some old conveyor belting with cleats on it from a mine or gravel pit. They'd torch out the body so they could wrap a loop of belting around the tires on each side. Then they'd lock the steering straight ahead and split the brake system left and right and mount a second pedal and master cylinder so they could skid steer it. He said it wasn't much for hills, but they didn't have a lot of hills there and it would go great across the flatland in deep snow. Later on he drove an early Tucker to maintain the Mullan Pass VOR during the winter.
