Thinking back to 20+ years ago I once looked at a 1/2 ton ambulance in Arizona that made me think it had been in action and sent back for repair, probably before 1943 as you mentioned. This truck had had something very large come into the cab in the roof area above the windshield at one time. The metal had been hammered back and filled and welded into place. Made me think I didn't want to have been the driver back then.
