I'd stay with D.O.T. 3. If you go with silicone (DOT 5) you can't use regular brake fluid again with out completely flushing with alcohol to get all the 5 out. You have to flush anyway if you aren't replacing all the parts to get rid of the DOT 3 or 4.

DOT 3 and 4 are hygroscopic in nature meaning they wil absorb moisture from the air. DOT won't do this but the water will still condense and settle in places with the possibility of freezing in really cold weather. I've also heard that some brake light switches can fail if they are a pressure type. (Yours shouldn't be one, it should be a switch on the brake pedal.)
