Yes, you have described them correctly and the same lens can be used on both sides by turning them 180 degrees. I do have 1 brand new turn signal. (I found it at a antique garage sale of all places. Just about S**T when I saw it listed for $6.00!!!!) I can take one of the lenses apart and send you the plastic insert.
I'll send you by email some images of the turn signal housing and an old plastic lens that I have so you can get an idea of what's needed. (I can't figure out how to post images here.)
