The cheapest way (which worked fine on my pos-ground,
6V M37) is too just replace the voltage regulator a
spark coil with 12 V ones. You could also keep the 6V
coil and add a series resistor. The old 6V generator
generates 12 V just fine and the starter spins faster
which is an improvement. And of course put in 12 V light
bulbs when you get to it. When you get gages, any ammeter
will be fine, but the gas gage and sender will need to be
changed or you'll have to get a 6V reg for it like they
sell in jc whitney. Nothing on my truck has burnt out or
broken yet and other people report no problems keeping
the old generator and starter.
