I have trucks in the 70's and the 90's. The 80's trucks started the creases in the fenders and bed, and the more modern pleated and plastic interior. My opinions: The advantage of the 70's full time trucks is that they go almost anywhere without having to be locked into four wheel drive. The disadvantages are poor gas miliage and wear on the front drive train. Some of the transfer cases are chain drive rather than gear, which means they are less robust. Most of these trucks were automatic, my experience is that the automatic will go before the transfer case. These trucks can be converted to lockouts, but it requires modifications that cost $300-$500.

I have a '93 250 turbo diesel that I tow with 30% of the time. I trailer power wagons, cattle, hay, etc. It has 63K miles and still has the original brakes and paint. The rear engine seal leaked oil and was replaced by the dealer under warranty. The 5 speed Getrag transmission had to have bearing replacement 6 months ago, again under warranty. I agree that the paint is not the best, slight scratches expose the primer below. My engine is completely stock at this time (warranty preservation), I get the 20-24 mpg, but I don't think it will go 105mph. The stock Cummins engine is designed for a lot more power and speed than in the form it comes in the Ram. Significant power and speed increases can be obtained with low cost modifications and adjustments. Spend more money and you need heavier clutches and drive shafts, etc. I am completely satisfied with my truck.

As you probably know, the '94 and newer trucks have softer ride, modern quieter interior, and more power. There are more after market accessories available for these trucks, also.

Hope this helps.
