First engine overhaul, first manual tranny, first transfer case, first carb rebuild. (first auto was in a 72 Dodge D-100). All concurrent to my job/career as a tirebuster, up through brake and front end, to line mechanic. I learned on my own stuff so as not to risk a customer's car. Of course, my average cost of the WWII vehicles in the 70's and 80's was about $200, so not much to lose.

As a full time "student", I snuck up on trannys and rear ends. Change a seal, change bearings in a RV who's chassis was left in the snow at Winnebago, before gaining enough confidence to change a gear set. The crash box is the simplist of trannys. First major work I did was to swap cases to get a PTO on the left of my Command Car. Go for it.

But then, that dual pinion bearing in the M37 stumped me... fortunatly, complete pumpkins are cheaper than new gears...
