i was fortunate to be able to watch bob stahl and his friend al regear my command car. bob is a gear guru and along with paul caudell produce the 489s we all use. he has built jigs and special tools to do the job right. after watching him do his thing, i was convinced that the professional premium paid was worth it. the downside to doing it at home is grenading the unit and you are to blame. the set bob did on my m37 has handled many boston - long island runs and the offroad abuse the new owner has dished out. its not hard work but without the right setup its not something i would want to attempt with regular tools. there is a fair amount of 'feel' associated with the process. my family owns a trucking company with a full shop and i still felt the dodge rear work was better handled by a pro. if you do it yourself, bob will walk you through it and correctly advise you to buy the special non fiber thrust washers he has had made. paul, i know you have good hands, but i think after seeing it myself that i would be more confident rebuilding a flathead than doing diff work.
