Just for some more fill in ifno on this- the masking tape I used is stuff I bought at the auto paint shop 1/4" green. The non-acetone fingernail polish remover took paint with it. I am under a wild assumption that I was using enamel. I have been known to be wrong on more than one occasion. Citrus-based stuff didn't touch the adhesive. I'll try the gasoline - maybe a match with that will take care of my problem. (outside of course) Thanks for your info so far.
