I need to make an adapter for the pinion seal on my 62 M37. I put a newer style seal in it about 1 1/2 yr. ago. When I did, I knocked out the stock felt and leather seal and replaced it with modern seal (national #473454) that had the correct ID and the OD was (I think) 2.5". Anyway I worked great, but last Oct. on a trail ride @ Windrock in Tn, I broke a pinion tooth and have replaced the third member with one from the front axle from a 53 M37 parts truck. It works great but of course the pinion seal leaks so I was gonna replace it with the same new seal as my 62 M37 but the ID of the housing that holds the seal, which is about 4" dia. is about 1/16" or so bigger, so my new seal won't fit! I don't have my calipers here so I was wondering if any one knew the exact OD of the bearing housing (seems to be about 4" dia with a scale) and if I can't come up with a seal tomorrow then I will hop on the lathe a make me an adapter for my seal. Has anyone made one of these before? I am in a rush to get it fixed cause I'm loading it on a trailer bound for Oak Ridge TN to Windrock for a trail ride with some more old Dodges and Powerwagons Thursday morning! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
