Way better to have the lockers engaged on demand. If you get in a jam where there is a failure of a locker, just run out the winch cable.
I spent most of yesterday at ARB who has been manufacturing Air lockers for a long time for extreme heavy duty use. I seriously doubt that the locker itself would fail before you break and axle. The new smaller compressor they offer (just to run lockers, not for air tools) looks like a trouble free unit. They have one running in the bottom of a fish tank in the shop, and it's been there for several months. If you did have a compressor failure, you could have a backup air tank to deliver air to the locker. I've found it's nice to have a tank of compressed air or CO2 on the trail anyway for adjusting tire pressure of running air tools.
