I have a 99 Bettle TDI. 188k+ miles and still ticking. Check out Dieselgeek.com for a skid plate for the engine. If you have a Beetle, the lowest part of the car is the oil pan, and it has absolutely no protection from punctures. I'm not sure about the other models concerning the low engine issue
