Looks like Philipine Mahogany. So hard Cat Treads will make sparks. Very utilitarian, cheap too. I see it on tons of trucks here in California. Ugly though, and always looks splintery.
I'd go with white oak. Unless I do soemthing quite exotic, like Bubinga.
