I would think that pushing on one side while it heats would tend to moush the metal before it gets hot enough to weld. Try a carbon ron in your welder, and kick the switch on and off to test dtrive the concept. But my instincts might be wrong again...

But the flanger sure helped, I self-drill screw my patchs to the flange. I made my own with a pair of vise grips. Lots of angle to the blocks ao it gets into tighter holes. They also sell a right-angle flanger, but it cost more...
