One trick I learned... when you get the clamp on there and tightened down, like Doc Dave said - it can still be ON there... wack the end of the clamp with a hammer!! I mean wack it! Don't damage the puller, but wacking it seems to dislodge whatever (rust) has been holding it on for 50 years!
After that, mine came off slick as a whistle!
