I don't drop the drums on the floor as this may generate cracks where there were none before I suspend them on a wire or seal hook and rap them lightly with a hammer. They should ring like a bell. A thud indicates cracking. The ding test can apply to coil and belleville springs as well. The principal is the same as when testing crystal by tapping with a thumb nail.
