Yeah, it's about 69,000 more than the population of Wallace and 5 times the population of Shoshone County. Our cities are pretty crowded but by my figuring the whole county averages out to 5 people per square mile, which is still pretty roomy.

About the only Mexicans you see around here are tree-planting crews, and they leave as soon as the job is done, but we've got hordes of Californians coming in buying $400,000 condos and houses before they're even built. Just this year the county had to hire its own building inspector. There's a WalMart going up in Smelterville. If it's the Mexicans that are chasing everybody out of L.A. I guess a that's why they're coming up here. Some of the Californians are nice enough, but they have a different idea of what the government's supposed to do for them. A new Californian neighbor showed me how a piece of the curb in front of their house was broken and asked me last year who I should talk to in the city to get it fixed. It was actually one of the better curbs in town, and I had to tell them the city wasn't going to fix it, but I told them where the hardware store was and said it looked to me like one sack of concrete should do the job. Another guy just built a "log cabin" right in amongst all the old houses in town. I guess he thinks North Idaho is the wild wilderness or something. The guy that had owned the lot forever didn't want to sell to him, but eventually he made him such a high offer he couldn't refuse.

Seriously, I don't see how a normal guy like Norm can stand it in California. Even if you're out in the sticks somewhere, you gotta submit to all the stupid smog laws and gun laws and land use laws and bureaucratic foolery of the L.A./S.F. people that run the state. The worst of it is it seems every stupid idea the Californians come up with, the rest of the states eventually copy. Now I see Washington and Oregon are going to impose California-style auto emissions rules. It was bad enough when they started charging admission to state parks.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox.
